The luminaires shall be marked for dc operation. Exception No. Transformers shall be enclosed, identified for the use, and listed. Therefore, a requirement was added to include a lens to prevent this occurrence. Luminaire Types Permitted. Fittings identified for use on lighting track shall be designed specifically for the track on which they are to be installed. The canopyshall be permitted to include a section of raceway not over150 mm (6 in.) See Figure 410.2. Recessed parts of a luminaire (fixture) that is not identified for contact with insulation must be at least 13 mm ( in.) Also in part (B), the clearance to any insulation is required to be at least 3 inches. Lamps shall not be located where normally exposed to physical damage. General-purpose electrical equipment includes heaters, switches, receptacles, and cords. Thermal Protection Fluorescent Luminaires. The two that stand out are where subject to physical damage, which to date the NEC cant or wont define, and wet or damp locations. When inspecting the supports, please remember 410.154 Fastening, which states that it shall be securely mounted so that each support is suitable for the weight of the luminaires that can be installed. In 410.16, Clearance and Installation, the requirements are covered depending on the type of luminaire. All of the electrical equipment and enclosures must be specifically approved for the location [682.10]. NEC Article 410 contains requirements for installing _____. I will not go into detail here, but the scope has a laundry list of items and you will find that it is pretty exclusively related to lighting products and devices. There are two specific locations I want to cover in this article. Electric-discharge and LED luminaires supported independently of the outlet box shall be connected to the branch circuit through metal race way, nonmetallic raceway, Type MC cable, Type AC cable, Type MI cable, nonmetallic sheathed cable, or by flexible cord as permitted in 410.62(B) or 410.62(C). The next important item is 410.6, which states that all luminaires and lamp holders shall be listed. While it may be possible to list them together, I havent seen a fixture that is listed for another manufacturers trims. According to the NEC 410.16(A), the following is defined as acceptable for installation in clothing closets: Surface or recessed incandescent or LED luminaires with an enclosed light source. The installation shall comply with 410.59(A) through (E). Wiring on or within luminaires shall be neatly arranged and shall not be exposed to physical damage. Raceway fittings used to support a luminaire(s) shall be capable of supporting the weight of the complete fixture assembly and lamp(s). Enclosures. As we all know, heat rises, and a heat pocket is created within each fixture. Recepta cles, connectors, and attachment plugs shall be of a listed grounding type rated 15 or 20 amperes. Luminaires shall be installed so that adjacent combustible material will not be subjected to temperatures in excess of 90C (194F). So at first, the contractor had to field install these devices, but eventually manufacturers started to ship units with the disconnects installed. So on a non-IC type we must have a 1/2 inch space from any recessed parts to combustibles, excluding the support or finish trims. Luminaires shall be constructed, installed, or equipped with shades or guards so that combustible material is not subjected to temper atures in excess of 90C (194F). IAEI News Magazine. The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a regionally adoptable standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States. Only luminaires of the following types shall be permitted in a closet: Surface-mounted or recessed incandescent or LED luminaires with completely enclosed light sources, Surface-mounted or recessed fluorescent luminaires, Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires identi fied as suitable for installation within the closet storage space. Use Table 402.5 for 18-16 AWG conductors. Which section of the NEC requires that at least 6" of free conductor length be left at each outlet box when cutting the branch circuit wires in preparation for connecting a light fixture? Listing Required. However, the only requirements for luminarie installations in closets appear in section 410.16, which specifically addresses luminaires in clothes closets. Part V reviews the grounding requirements and basically states that if a luminaire or lighting equipment has metal parts, it shall be grounded. Recessed. Considered as Energized. Unless an individual switch is provided for each luminaire, lampholders shall be located at least 2.5 m (8 ft) above the floor or shall be located or guarded so that the lamps cannot be readily removed or damaged. Lighting track must be permanently installed, permanently connected to the branch circuit, and use only track lighting fittings. 4: A disconnecting means shall not be required in industrial establishments with restricted public access where conditions of maintenance and supervision ensure that only qualified persons service the installation by written procedures. Metal Halide Lamp Containment. Parts VI through IX deal with items generally covered by the manufacturers of the luminaires. The clearance between the luminaire (fixture) and nearest point of storage must be 150 mm (6 in.). Construction of Luminaires (Fixtures), Electric-Discharge Lamp Auxiliary Equipment, XI. of the recessed luminaires enclosure, wiring compartment, ballast, transformer, LED driver, or power supply unless the luminaire is identified as Type IC for insulation contact. As we mentioned earlier, we have a definition for closet storage space. Therefore, these fixtures now require a disconnecting means. The track conductors shall be a minimum 12 AWG or equal and shall be copper. The free lead at the end of a group of showcases has a female fitting not extending beyond the case. Wiring methods and materials supplying the luminaire(s) shall not be exposed within the cooking hood. Equipment that has an open- circuit voltage exceeding 1000 volts shall not be installed in or on dwelling occupancies. Refer to 310.15 or 310.60 for 14 AWG and larger conductors. a disconnecting means either internal or external to each luminaire (fixture), to disconnect simultaneously from the source of supply all conductors of the ballast, including the grounded conductor if any. Exit Luminaires. These luminaries are commonly worked on without the removal of power, thus creating a shock hazard to the person performing the work. Im not going to cover every one of these items in detail, but please be aware that units installed in wet or damp locations have to be listed for the appropriate location and should prevent water from entering a wiring compartment. There are additional requirements for cable installed in cable tray and cable grouped together supported by messenger cable. A simple reactance ballast in a fluorescent luminaire with straight tubular lamps shall not be required to be thermally protected. No Other Equipment. 410.90 Screw Shell Type. 1.2 m (4 ft) in length shall have one additional support. (B) Metal or Nonmetallic Poles Supporting Luminaires (Lighting Fixtures). However, Ive had inspectors try to apply the requirements for closets in 410 to other locations. A recessed luminaire that is identified for contact with insulation, Type IC, shall be permitted to be in contact with combustible materials at recessed parts, points of support, and portions passing through or finishing off the opening in the building structure. . Introductioin to the National Electrical Code. The idea with this code requirement is that we dont want a heat source, the luminaire, to be in contact with anything that may be stored there. Since the closet doors are generally closed, if the fixture is left on and overheats items in the closet, the resulting fire could go unnoticed for quite some time. Exposed Components. All rights reserved. Along with making sure they have used lamps that are not larger than the luminaire allows per its listing and labeling, these little foil-covered insulation pieces are part of the fixture and are there to ensure we dont have heat transfer from the lamp to the wire terminations. The groun ded conductor, where connected to a screw shell lampholder, shall be connected to the screw shell. Article 410 is another example of an article in Chapter 4 of the NEC that often doesn't get a lot of emphasis from multi-trade inspectors. for recessed fluorescent luminaires instal led in the wall or the ceiling. 410.160 Listing of Decorative Lighting. Connection of Electric-Discharge and LED Luminaires. Type IC. XII. It is permitted, however, if the luminaire (fixture) is listed for that use. The terminals of an electric- discharge lamp shall be considered as energized where any lamp terminal is connected to a circuit of over 300 volts. A brief note regarding 410.18 Space for Cove Lighting: the code states that cove lighting shall have adequate space so that lamps and equipment can be properly installed and serviced. 410.44 Methods of Grounding. Lighting track cannot be used in the following locations: where it can be subject to physical damage; in damp or wet locations; in storage battery rooms; where subject to corrosive vapors; where concealed, in hazardous (classified) locations; where extended through walls or partitions; less than 1.5 m (5 ft.) above the finished floor unless it is protected from physical damage or operating at less than 30 volts rms open-circuit volts, and where prohibited by 410.4(D). All luminaires installed in wet locations shall be marked, "Suitable for Wet Locations ." The second location to cover in detail is clothes closets, which is found in 410.16. Luminaires in Indoor Sports, Mixed-Use, and All-Purpose Facilities. 1: No handhole shall be required in a pole 2.5 m (8 ft) or less in height abovegrade where the supply wiring method continues without splice or pull point, and where the interior of the pole and any splices are accessible by removing the luminaire.Exception No. The conductors shall be installed within the track housing, permit ting insertion of a luminaire, and designed to prevent tamper ing and accidental contact with live parts. Open-Circuit Voltage of 1000 Volts or Less. Suspended Ceilings. Access to Boxes. Separate Mounting. If we miss this, then there may be an issue that can lead to a fire. Heavy-duty lighting track is lighting track identified for use exceeding 20 amperes. Circuit Conductors. Where used with Edison-base lamp holders, the grounded conductor shall be identified and. Parts of the luminaire exposed within the hood shall be corrosion resistant or protected against corrosion, and the surface shall be smooth so as not to collect deposits and to facilitate cleaning. Article 430 contains the specific rules for conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, control circuit conductors, motor controllers, and disconnecting means. All luminaires installed in wet locations shall be marked, "Suitable for Wet Locations." Accessible. Integral Thermal Protection. Heavy-Duty Lighting Track. In addition to complying with the general requirements for luminaires, such equipment shall comply with Part XIII of this article. There are other requirements in each of these parts that I encourage you to review, since this article only covers the highlights. For inspections related to location of a luminaire within a closet, we cant install the luminaire within the modified cube shape described in the definition. These are the 10 NEC Article 410 items we deem most important, based on the pervasiveness of confusion and the potential costs of same. Separately mounted ballasts, trans formers, LED drivers, or power supplies that are listed for direct connection to a wiring system shall not be required to be additionally enclosed. One note Id like to add regarding these inspections. Subject. For some reason, these are not commonly purchased with an IC rating. An autotransformer that is used to raise the voltage to more than 300 volts, as part of a ballast for supplying lighting units, shall be supplied only by a grounded system. 2: No handhole shall be required in a pole 6.0 m (20 ft) or less in height abovegrade that is provided with a hinged base. Luminaires over Combustible Material. Equipped with Flanged Surface Inlet. Transformers shall have a secondary short-circuit current rating of not more than 150 mA if the open-circuit volt age is over 7500 volts, and not more than 300 mA if the open- circuit voltage rating is 7500 volts or less. Conductors that have insulation suitable for the temperature encountered shall be used. Luminaire Types Not Permitted. Luminaires and lighting equipment shall be grounded as required in Article 250 and Part V of this article. For the AHJ, this is once again one of those judgment calls. (D) Bathtub and Shower Areas. Some of the "quick" requirements include: The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) must approve all electrical conductors and equipment [Sec. A bushing or the equivalent shall be provided where flexible cord enters the base or stem of a porta ble luminaire. Luminaires shall be permitted to be installed in commercial cooking hoods where all of the follow ing conditions are met: The luminaire shall be identified for use within commer cial cooking hoods and installed such that the tempera ture limits of the materials used are not exceeded. 400.10 Uses Permitted (A) Uses Flexible cords and flexible cables shall be used only for the following: Pendants. The lampholder must be at least 2.5 m (8 ft.) above the floor unless an individual switch is installed for each fixture. Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires shall be permitted to be installed within the closet storage space where identified for this use. Type IC fixtures are designed to be installed in such a way that they may have insulation directly in contact with them. The line side terminals of the disconnecting means shall be guarded.Exception No. Thermal protection shall not be required in a recessed high-intensity discharge lumin aire identified for use and installed in poured concrete. Chain-supported lumin aires used in a show window shall be permitted to be externally wired. No parts of cord-connected luminaires, chain-, cable, or cord-suspended luminaires, lighting track, pendants, or ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans shall be located within a zone measured 900 mm (3 ft) horizontally and 2.5 m (8 ft) vertically from the top of the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold. Special Provisions for Electric-Discharge Lighting Systems of More Than 1000 Volts. They look the same in size and design, especially during construction. The housing for the lighting track system shall be of substantial construction to maintain rigidity. Tap conductors of a type suitable for the temperature encountered shall be permitted to run from the luminaire terminal connection to an outlet box placed at least 300 mm (1 ft) from the luminaire. A recessed remote ballast for a high-intensity discharge luminaire shall have thermal protec tion that is integral with the ballast and shall be identified as thermally protected. Fixtures and lampholders must be securely supported. 410.40 General. Then, if you see something that just doesnt look right during an inspection, you will know where to go to verify the code requirements. For common inspections, it is important to verify that the outlet boxes are covered; this is usually done by the fixture and/or the canopy. The fittings cannot have general-purpose receptacles. Transformers of the Oil-Filled Type. Luminaires that have exposed ballasts, transformers, LED drivers, or power supplies shall be installed such that ballasts, transformers, LED drivers, or power supplies shall not be in contact with combustible material unless listed for such condition. Conductor insulation shall be protected from abrasion where it passes through metal. Conductors in vertical poles used as raceway shall be supported as provided in 300.19. Diffusers shall be resistant to thermal shock. These changes can be found in Article 690, Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems. Dwelling Occupancies. for surface-mounted fluorescent lumin aires installed on the wall above the door or on the ceil ing. No other externally wired luminaires shall be used. This often leads to problems, such as when we have special luminaires used inside casinos, hotels and other large facilities where the units are actually a piece of artwork with lights attached. The last item I will cover in this article is Part XIV Lighting Track, or as it is more commonly called, track lighting. Luminaires listed and marked for use as a raceway shall be permitted to be used as a raceway. Switches. Stranding. (B) Luminaire (Fixture) Types Permitted. Inlets and connectors shall be permitted to be of a lower ampere rating than the branch circuit but not less than 125 percent of the luminaire load current. Recessed lighting is an item I emphasize as one of the most important items for inspections. 410.110 General. Type IC luminaires have different requirements. One of the requirements is that these units must have a thermal protection device that will disconnect the lamp if the temperature limit is exceeded. Recessed high-intensity luminaires designed to be installed in wall or ceiling cavities shall have thermal protec tion and be identified as thermally protected. Luminaires shall be permitted to be connected to busways in accordance with 368.17(C). This is usually not an issue on 6 or 7 inch recessed cans, as they are typically IC rated and easily checked. Professional. Framing members of suspended ceil ing systems used to support luminaires shall be securely fastened to each other and shall be securely attached to the building structure at appropriate intervals. Professional. The first is related to locations in and near bathtub and shower areas. It is part of the National Fire Code series published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a private trade association. Location. No unnecessary splices or taps shall be made within or on a luminaire.Informational Note: For approved means of making connec tions, see 110.14. Electrical Rating. Lampholders installed over highly combustible material shall be of the unswitched type. General. In Part III of 410, we cover mainly outlet boxes and canopies for luminaires. That zone is 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the tub rim or the shower threshold. Installation. Receptacles and attachment plugs shall be permitted to be of a lower ampere rating than the branch circuit but not less than 125 percent of the luminaire full-load current. Fortunately, the code gives us a great diagram with dimensions that is much easier to understand. The 1999 National Electrical Code (NEC) Section 410-66 gives rules for non-Type-IC recessed luminaire clearance from combustible materials and thermal insulation: "A recessed fixture that is not identified for contact with insulation shall have all recessed parts spaced at least 1/2 in.
